Glacier & Ice Tours
Guided glacier hikes, ice cave tours, and icefield trips on crampons.
Glacier travel is guided almost without exception, because crevasse hazard is not something a visitor can assess unaided. Alaska is the center of the American industry, with operations on the Matanuska, Exit, Root, and Mendenhall glaciers and across the icefields above Juneau and Seward. Trips take a few distinct forms: a glacier hike that reaches the ice on foot, a helicopter landing that puts guests on terrain with no walking approach, and an ice cave tour into blue meltwater passage. Guides supply crampons and route-find around crevasses and moulins that open and close as the ice moves. Ice cave access is genuinely seasonal and genuinely uncertain, since a cave that was stable one winter may be gone the next, and an operator that treats a specific cave as guaranteed is overselling. Glaciers across the region continue to retreat, which is now part of what most guides discuss on the ice.
