Adventure touring in Michigan

The Great Lakes set the terms in Michigan. Up in the Upper Peninsula, Lake Superior grinds against a rugged coastline backed by the dense timber of the Ottawa National Forest and the old rock of the Porcupine Mountains. Guides here run kayaks along the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, rafts down the Peshtigo River's whitewater, and backcountry hikers deep into the Huron Mountains. The Lower Peninsula answers with its own material (sand dunes, long river systems, rolling hills), and its own set of guided trips to match.

Water is the main event. Guided kayak and paddleboard tours work the clear stretch of Lake Michigan near Sleeping Bear Dunes, where the bluffs stack hundreds of feet over the beach and maritime forest crowds the shore. Inland, the Manistee and Au Sable rivers carry fishing guides and quiet canoe trips through some of the best paddling water in the Midwest. Over on Lake Huron, Mackinac Island trades motors for bicycles, guided biking and historical walking tours thread natural beauty through a genuinely old place.

Dry land holds its own. Michigan's trail networks, including long sections of the North Country Trail, carry guided backpacking trips and day hikes that peak when the fall color comes through. The U.P.'s granite outcrops hold rock climbing routes, with guided instruction from first-timer to experienced. Then winter arrives and rewrites the map: guided snowmobile tours run hundreds of miles of groomed trail across both peninsulas, with Gaylord and Munising as the busiest jumping-off points.

What keeps all of this working is how well the state has protected the raw material. Isle Royale National Park sits out in Superior, reachable by guided boat tours; the Hiawatha National Forest holds quiet, uncrowded woods on the mainland. Michigan's adventure operators have built their trade around matching trips to people, a first paddle or a fifth expedition, and giving both a real look at what the Great Lakes State keeps out past the pavement.
